This year, the BMW CCA Foundation’s BMW M3: 40 Years of Evolution is celebrating what is, arguably, BMW’s most iconic model with 25 incredible examples of the model. And if that wasn’t enough reason to visit the Ultimate Driving Museum this year, now there’s another: BMW USA’s McLaren F1 GTR has joined the exhibit for a limited time.
Chassis 17R is a true legend and survivor. This car, run by Italy’s Team Bigazzi in the 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans, finished eighth with Johnny Cecotto, Danny Sullivan, and Nelson Piquet behind the wheel. Now part of BMW USA’s collection, the car is used for exhibitions, occasional vintage races, and frequently displayed at events and concours. Up until recently, it was inside the Zentrum at BMW’s Spartanburg, S.C. plant. Instead of going back into hiding, the F1 is now taking up residence at the Ultimate Driving Museum for a limited time.
