You read that headline correctly. BMW is bringing a new Touring model to this side of the Atlantic. The long-teased BMW M5 Touring (which we’ve expressed longing for in several articles here, here, and here) is finally coming to the US.
BMW enthusiasts in the US often get to hear about vehicle models that excite the imagination, but end up not being released in the States. And few unreleased model types evoke as much vocal frustrations for American BMW enthusiasts as BMW’s Touring, a.k.a. “station wagon,” models.
Many members of BMW’s official enthusiast club for the U.S., the BMW Car Club of America (which publishes BimmerLife online and BMW Car Club Magazine: BimmerLife), have repeatedly praised, requested, and practically begged for new Touring models to come to the U.S. And in it’s most recent announcement, BMW states, “American fans of the M brand have even more to look forward to – much more. Enthusiasts across the country have made their voices heard, and their wish has been granted. Today, BMW confirmed that the BMW M5 Touring will be available to customers in the US for the very first time.”
So it’s not just “a” Touring model, but the much-anticipated M5 Touring!
According to the press release, “Like the future BMW M5 Sedan, the next M5 Touring will feature an M Hybrid drivetrain closely related to the one found in the BMW M Hybrid V8 GTP race car. Its M-typical performance characteristics along with precisely tuned chassis technology facilitate driving dynamics and agility at a level unique in its class.”
And if you’re curious as to the allure of these long-bodied, more-sedan-than-SAV models, look no farther than our own print magazine, BMW Car Club Magazine: BimmerLife’s 2023 Fall/Winter issue, and the feature “Love of the Long Roof” by Mike Bevels on page 46. You can read the full issue (and all issues of the magazine) for free at bimmerlife.com/publications.
Now we’re not saying that BMW decided to bring the M5 Touring to the U.S. solely as a result of the dedicated enthusiasts of the BMW CCA, but there’s little doubt that BMW was listening to the members of its largest enthusiast club in the world.
