Hofor Racing by Bonk Motorsport has won the Silver class driver and team championships in the SRO GT4 European Series, with drivers Michael Schrey and Gabriele Piana competing in the #2 M4 GT4. Based in Münster, Germany, Bonk Motorsport has a long history of racing with BMW and competed in the ADAC GT4, 24H Series and Nurburgring Endurance Championship in addition to the GT4 European Series. Another BMW team, Borusan Otomotiv Motorsport, finished third in the championship with the #12 M4 GT4 driven by Tom Edgar and Berkay Besler.
The Hofor Racing by Bonk Motorsport team came into the final two races at Barcelona with a 24-point lead in the championship. That lead was reduced to 16-points when they finished seventh in the first race, but the team bounced back to win the second race and secure the championship after starting from the pole. “We tuned the BMW conservatively in Barcelona,” said team boss Michael Bonk. “That’s why the tires held up perfectly and we were able to drive fast laps until the end. We drove our first full season after two guest starts last year. We were competitive from the start and won the championship straight away. That was certainly not a given. The team, especially Felix Schmenck, who was responsible for this project, and the drivers did a great job. This was a highlight for Bonk Motorsport.”
Overall, BMW teams had thirteen podium finishes in the GT4 European Championship Silver class with the M4 GT4, including five wins. The championship-winning duo of Schrey and Piana had six podiums and three wins, and the Borusan Otomotiv Motorsport entry of Tom Edgar and Berkay Besler had four podiums and one win.
