The fastest, most track-ready version of the BMW M2 that you could buy used to be the M2 CS. That car’s extra power, suspension upgrades, and added lightness make it far more capable than the standard M2 right out of the box. However, BMW just added a new package that turns the little guy into a giant slayer. A regular BMW M2, fitted with the all-new M Performance Track Kit, just officially lapped the Nurburgring faster than an M2 CS, and even did so in less than ideal conditions. That makes the the Track Kit-equipped M2 the most capable car in the lineup.

What the heck is in that track pack that can bump the standard M2 all the way up to CS-beating talent? It’s really broken down into two main upgrades: suspension and aerodynamics. The Track Kit comes with a “motorsport damper system with road approval for the first time,” whatever that means. It sounds good, though, no? In addition to a motorsport suspension, it also gets some pretty epic looking aero. There’s an adjustable front splitter, “aero flicks,” and an adjustable swan-neck rear wing that has a dedicated Race Mode setting. The setup for this kit was developed by Jörg Weidinger, BMW M’s in-house hot-shoe for sports car development who’s set several Nurburgring records for BMW.

One of those records is the 7:25.068 Nurburgring lap Weidinger just set in the Track Kit-equipped M2, now making it the fastest car in the compact segment ever around the legendary circuit. It’s also half a second faster than the M2 CS. And, when Weidinger ran the TÜV Rheinland-verified record-setting lap, ambient temps were high, as were track temps, and there was some slippery oil on the T13 section. So the upgraded M2 might even have a faster lap in it, under ideal conditions.

“With the new M Performance Track Kit, we are offering the trackday community uncompromising performance, perfectly tailored to the BMW M2,” says Jonas Krauss, Head of Product Management BMW M Performance Parts.

OK, so the Track Kit costs almost $27,000. That pushes the M2 to six-figure territory after taxes, or even a single option. That ain’t cheap. However, the M2 CS isn’t on sale anymore, so this is now the fastest M2 you can buy. And if those sort of bragging rights are what you’re after, it’s hard to put a price tag on them. Well, until the all-wheel drive M2 goes on sale, then it might be the one to get.
