If there were ever a car that seemed tailor made to become a Lego set, it’d be the E30 M3. It’s so boxy, with its rectangular shapes and hard edges, that it’s perfect for Lego duty. Hell, even its fender flares are boxy and I can think of how to make them with just a few ordinary Lego pieces. So it’s only fitting that BMW and Lego would partner up to make an E30 M3 set for the car’s 40th anniversary.
This new Lego set is part of the brand’s Speed Champions line, which is a more affordable line of car sets. At only $30, it’s significantly cheaper than many of the far more detailed car sets Lego offers. With that lower price, though, comes a less accurate looking car once it’s all put together. Although, it’s still pretty close and, c’mon, it’s an E30 M3. You could make one out of kids’ wooden blocks and it’d look accurate.

It still has the boxy fender flares, the front air intake, and the big rear wing, so it hits the important notes. Additionally, BMW helped create the unique livery for this Lego set, with a digital pattern made up of the M Division’s iconic colors. The gold wheels and yellow headlights are nice touches, too, as they give off an ’80s vibe that emphasizes its 40 years of age.
Interesting car Lego sets of relatively unknown cars to the public aren’t anything new, as there are countless sets of cool cars that only enthusiasts would know of. However, it’s still cool to see an E30 M3, a car whose name would sound like a dishwasher’s model number to anyone other than diehard car nerds. The E30 M3 was one of the best and most important Bimmers of all time, so to see it immortalized in colorful plastic blocks is awesome. Pre-orders start now, and they’ll ship after August 1. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to find my wallet.
