In 1975, BMW officially entered IMSA with its own works team, run out of Bobby Allison’s NASCAR shop in Alabama. The new German team didn’t come into the series quietly, winning the 12 Hours of Sebring and a number of other races in its maiden season. In 1976, Peter Gregg and Brumos took over running the team, and they also had tremendous success, winning the 24 Hours of Daytona.

Of course, this weekend is the 24 Hours of Daytona, but it’s also been 50 full years since that momentous 1976 win. I started looking around the internet for clips from that time, which are few and far between, but stumbled on a video from the Monterey Motorsports Reunion nearly 20 years ago, where Brian Redman got a chance to drive a CSL again, all those years later.

It’s a great, quick watch, and it features a lot of lovely engine noise from the CSL and the M1. Sit back and enjoy.
