The E89-generation BMW Z4 might be one of the most underappreciated Bimmers in recent memory. When it first launched, it took some criticism for lacking the steering feel and driver engagement of the previous model, and for packing an entry-level four-cylinder. However, fast forward 17 years it’s looking better and better, especially as a budget sports car option. This 2010 example that recently sold on Bring a Trailer could prove that really cool examples can be had for affordable prices.
Is it just me or is the E89 Z4’s design aging like fine wine? The long, low-sloping nose, the curvaceous rear haunches, and the sweeping body lines give it a sporty but elegant vibe that’s lost on new Bimmers. Compared to the new insectoid Z4, the E89 looks almost like an Italian grand tourer. And this specific car’s Orion Silver Metallic paint not only shows off all of its body lines but adds a touch of class, with its subtle beige tint.

Here’s where this car is special, though — it’s a naturally aspirated straight-six model with a stick. The short-lived BMW Z4 sDrive30i model, which only lasted from 2009-2011, was replaced with a turbocharged four-cylinder sDrive28i. While the Z4 sDrive30i was around, it packed a free-breathing 3.0-liter straight-six, BMW’s N52 engine and came with either a six-speed auto or a six-speed manual. This specific car has the latter, making it one of the very last naturally aspirated I-6 BMW sports cars to come with a such a transmission. So whoever buys this isn’t just getting a cool sports car with good looks, they’re getting a little piece of BMW history.
This one also reminds me of just how cool and underappreciated these cars are. And if this nearly pristine example can sell for an affordable price, then there are bound to be average examples that can be had for cheap. Since the N52 is one of BMW’s more reliable engines (I’ve had two over the years, neither with a single issue *knocks on wood*), it’s a sports car that could last you a while, too. If you’re in the market for something fun with a blue and white Roundel, give the E89 a look.
