We hear the term “race car for the road” a lot. Its a moniker for cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, which are technically road cars but built for track use. This E30 M3 build that’s for sale on Cars and Bids, though, is genuinely a race car build that’s fully road legal. So you can cruise around town to grab a coffee or roll up to your local car meet in a genuine track-ready machine that looks like the iconic Warsteiner E30 M3 DTM car from the ’90s.

This build started out a bone-stock, U.S.-spec E30 M3. Then, the owner decided to make a proper track car build out of it. It isn’t just a couple of bolt-on engine mods, coilovers, and bigger brakes. It’s a complete overhaul, designed to be as quick as possible around a race track. The S14 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine was stroked to 2.5 liters, upgraded pistons, Schrick 272 cams, 48mm throttle bodies, and an upgraded 11:1 compression ratio. A Motec M4 engine management system handles all of the software, there’s a carbon fiber air intake, a Supersprint exhaust, and an extended, baffled oil pan. This engine is no joke.

A quick look inside shows it has no passenger seat, the interior is stripped bare, it has an FIA regulation roll cage, and a detachable steering wheel. It’s the real deal inside. The only stock part left on the car is the transmission, which is an original Getrag 265 five-speed manual. Other than that, there’s very little unchanged about this car.

Ironically, the owner claims to never have taken the car to the track. Instead, they’ve used it just for cruising around town and enjoying the drive. It’s fully road legal and is even registered in California, so there’s no stopping anyone from picking this up and using it as a fun little weekend toy. It rides on KW Club Sport coilovers, too, so it should ride pretty well.

Whoever buys this is going to have something they can use on the weekends, take to the track, and even just park in the garage to admire. They’ll have a legitimate race car that they can use whenever they want. It also looks like one of the very coolest touring cars in history, with its iconic Warsteiner livery and that’s gotta be worth something on its own.
