2026 M340i Passenger Seat Exchange

This will probably be a strange request. I haven’t owned a BMW daily driver for some time as the sport seat—which I love—is extremely uncomfortable for the better half. She has a 2025 X1 that just replaced her 2017 X1, and is happy with the seats. I would really like to replace her seat in the M340i which is on order with an X1 passenger seat. Has anyone done this?? Any thoughts on bolt pattern and wiring connections?

The alternative is to raise the seat and angle with spacers and grade eight fasteners, again wondering if anyone has done this. Online I see spacers available for other sports cars but not BMW.

How is the seat unfavorable for the better half? Is it not comfortable or is it the position that makes it uncomfortable? Have we tried a seat cushion at all?

Traditionally, these kinds of retrofits do not work without severe modification. When it comes to bolting down the seat, I highly doubt the holes will line up but you never know until you take measurements and check. Assuming they do not line up, you will need to get seat brackets made. This will raise the seat approx. an inch but you will need to get some assurance that this modification is safe. As for wiring the seat motors to work, you will need professional assistance to even see if this is feasible. Also, there may be an issue with the airbag system and the passenger seat occupation sensor. Since the chassis from the M340 to the X1 is not the same, this will definitely require diligence to see it through.

Transport Mode

I own a 2006 z4 3.0si with 62,000 miles and a six-speed. I have a problem with the IHKA module (HVAC)

As it only runs in transport mode and I can’t operate the AC or heat/defrost as it should. I have a Launch Creader Elite for BMW and it recognizes that it is in transport mode but won’t erase it, though it does communicate with it. I can test the functionality of the blower control lights, AC, and flaps which all respond. I have a k-can cable and a few laptops but can’t get the INPA software to work properly, so I’m going to try using an XP based laptop instead of Windows 10. Seeing how it is only the climate control that is affected, can it be a bad chip on the controller as I have read that is where the computer is that controls the IHKA? I have also disconnected the two terminals to the battery and connected them together for a half hour or more and connected a 13.8-volt 25-amp power supply to the battery so as to have enough voltage as that can also be an issue I have read. I really don’t want to throw parts at it and much prefer to troubleshoot.

I would try an ISTA copy if available or visit the dealership.

I personally use a separate laptop with ISTA and an ICOM that I got here.

I can talk to any BMW and it comes with all the other little coding features as well. For the money, it gets the job done.

My thought is that you need to remove the transportation lock via ISTA since its factory software. This is done via test plan and might be able to rectify the problem for you. Only other thought is to get a used IHKA and swap it in.
