2023 BMW M2

In a recent head-to-head driving challenge, Motortrend executive editor Mac Morrison and writer Scott Evans, gave both the 2023 BMW M2 and 2023 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 out for thorough testing.

They chose the two vehicles because of their similar specs and performance numbers. Both can go from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and can travel a quarter mile in 11.8 seconds. While the BMW is a bit heavier, it does also have a back seat, unlike the passenger-unfriendly Porsche.

Ready for a superhero driving experience? Also want to carry passengers in the back seat? Motortrend recommends the BMW M2 over the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0.

After lamenting that one has to “wring the Cayman’s neck to get anything out of it” regarding it’s torque, they write that “Dial back all your inputs, and the M2 becomes a superhero.”

While they give praise to both vehicles for different aspects of performance and describe it as “one of the closest comparison tests” they’ve done, ultimately, the BMW M2 wins the “best drive” contest for the authors. “Like for like, the BMW at the same speed on the same back road is more fun than the Cayman unless you’re driving right on the limit.”
