Alex Zanardi has been returned to intensive care in a Milan hospital after being sent briefly to a rehabilitation clinic. Autosport reported on June 24 that the concern of a team of doctors for his condition prompted the move.
As reported here earlier, Zanardi, a long-time racer, BMW brand ambassador, and Paralympic champion, received serious neurological and facial injuries in a handbike accident during a race held in Italy during June.
According to Autoweek, Zanardi’s son indicated that he was concerned about his father’s eyesight, and wondered “whether he can communicate with us again.” A priest representing the clinic where Zanardi was taken before he was returned to intensive care told Autoweek that Zanardi went in and out of consciousness. He said, “What is certain is that this is a man with an incredible will to live. Honestly, I don’t know where he gets his energy from.”—Brian Morgan
