The 2018 edition of the GS Trophy, an eight-day motorcycle odyssey sponsored by BMW Motorrad, ended today near Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, with a win by Team South Africa, which had also won the event in 2016. Teams from the USA and France finished second and third respectively.
BMW Motorrad has run the event every other year since 2008. Previous events were run in Tunisia, South Africa, Patagonia, Canada, and Thailand.
The teams each included three riders on BMW R 1200 GS Rally models specially prepared for the event. There were eighteen teams in all, including both national and multinational teams, with two international women’s teams among them. Each day the teams rode on varied terrain across Mongolia and competed in special events that included photo contests, archery, and GPS navigation on foot among other challenges.
