Five BMW models received 2024 awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety with three receiving Top Safety Pick, and two receiving the Top Safety Pick+ awards, which utilize updated criteria. According to their website, the IIHS tests vehicles to assess their,” crashworthiness — how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash — and crash avoidance and mitigation — technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity.”

According to the IIHS website, “Vehicles that perform best in our evaluations qualify for Top Safety Pick, which has been awarded since the 2006 model year, or Top Safety Pick+, which was inaugurated in 2013.

These awards identify the best vehicle choices for safety within size categories during a given year. Larger, heavier vehicles generally afford more protection than smaller, lighter ones. Thus, a small car that qualifies for an award might not protect its occupants as well as a bigger vehicle that doesn’t earn the award.”

The 2024-25 BMW 5 series, 2024 BMW X1, and BMW 2024-25 BMW X2 all received Top Safety Pick awards. According to the IIHS, to receive this award, vehicles must meet the following criteria during their rigorous testing:

  • Good ratings in the small overlap front test
  • Good rating in the original moderate overlap front test
  • Good rating in the updated side test
  • Acceptable or good headlights standard
  • Acceptable or good rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention test

The 2024 BMW X3 and the 2025 BMW X5 qualified for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. To be eligible for this award, IIHS winners must earn the following ratings:

  • Good ratings in the small overlap front test
  • Acceptable or good in the updated moderate overlap front test
  • Good rating in the updated side test
  • Acceptable or good headlights standard
  • Acceptable or good in the pedestrian front crash prevention test

The X5, which is assembled at BMW Plant Spartanburg in Greer, SC, earned good ratings in all these categories, in addition to having acceptable headlights across all trim levels. According to the plant’s social media post, “Plant Spartanburg is honored by this recognition and congratulations to the entire BMW Manufacturing team for this notable achievement.”
