500,000th car from BMW San Luis Potosi, Mexico is an M2 CS

BMW began building cars at its plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, in June 2019. Initially just for the 3-series, the plant added the 2-series coupe and M2 in 2021 and 2022. Now, just six years after opening, the 500,000th car has rolled off the line, a Velvet Blue M2 CS.

Considering the plant has only been open for six years, the 2-series is not a high volume model, and the 3-series is assembled in seven other plants around the globe, it’s an impressive number. And the M2 CS is an impressive car to celebrate with.

While we haven’t driven it yet–but we will soon–the CS looks amazing and should be impressively fast on track, especially since it set a 7:25.5 lap, the fastest ever for a compact sedan. San Luis Potosi also builds the racing variant of the M2, a car that now has a four-cylinder engine. Good for costs and longevity, a shame for fans of the S58 who want to hear it at full-tilt on track.

San Luis Potosi is responsible for all 2-series production globally, while most of the 3-series that are sold in Mexico, the US, and Canada are also built there. However, the M2 is the only M car built there, with M3 production limited to Germany.

The addition of a new battery module facility will see even further growth at the facility, as it will be capable of EV production. The Neue Klasse is planned to begin going down the line there in 2027.
