For the second year in a row, BMW CCA returned to Hilton Head Island for a special gathering of vehicles from BMW, Mercedes, and Audi, only this year there was very little rain and the event enjoyed abundant sunshine. The event was held on the 18th Fairway of Robber’s Row, Port Royal Golf Course. The day started before sunrise with vehicles flowing in the fire gate entrance of the golf course and onto the 18th fairway to be placed in their respective classes. As we were cleaning and polishing cars the day was dawn with a gorgeous sunrise that slowly started to shine a brilliant light on the show field. The last item remaining was to remove the morning dew from the vehicles along with any wet grass that had attached during the drive on the course. We were in for an unseasonably warm day for early November, but no one was complaining. Cars were wiped clean and shined until the announcement came around 9:30 a.m. for “rags down,” which meant no more cleaning as the judging was about to begin. As with previous Legends events, there were a few classes which spread across all three of the German marques present at the event.
Members thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality meals that were served for breakfast and lunch under the tent while also taking the time swapping stories about the vehicles on display. Legends East hosted several first-timers this year, which was exciting to see, and the venue that we shared in conjunction with the Hilton Head Island Concours & Motoring Festival was in pristine shape—a welcome sight after last year’s rains of biblical proportions caused just a few brave souls to gather in a parking lot.
As we meandered through the fairway looking at rows of BMWs, it quickly became apparent how amazing the collection of cars this year really was. There was everything present from 1930s vintage classics to the newer, more modern muscle. By mid-afternoon, the trophies had all been handed out and cars slowly crept off the fairway and back towards home. The only thing left were the memories and anticipation of next year.
Sponsors always make up a big part of the event and having our partners from various brands participate over the course of the weekend is always exciting. BMW CCA also announced an exciting new opportunity for members, with Collector Chassis showing up to display. Collector Chassis is creating an extension to the CCA online community with member-generated content that can be used to create a Collection page showcasing your cars or an opportunity to Buy & Sell vehicles through listings and auctions. This is a really exciting way to continue to extend the digital experience for our Members. Will from Collector Chassis was busy all day in conversation and even photographing a vehicle that will be listed soon so stay tuned!
Congratulations to all our winners this year in the various classes. The 2022 Legends of the Autobahn East Best in Show went to a very special vehicle. Paul and Jayne Queck’s 1956 502 was a stunning example and beautiful vehicle inside and out. After an eleven-year restoration, you can imagine the big smiles, fist pumps, and pride that came with winning the award.
Thanks to all our BMW CCA members, sponsors, and staff for helping make the 2022 Legends East event such a memorable time. —Jason Kazian
