BMW M Motorsport has introduced the M4 GT3 EVO, which includes updates to the highly successful M4 GT3. Presented to teams before the Nürburgring 24 Hour race, the car will be available for teams to race at the beginning of the 2025 season, including the BMW teams racing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and SRO Fanatec GT World Challenge America.
The focus on development with the M4 GT3 EVO was primarily to improve drivability, efficiency and reliability, with most of the development driving done by works drivers Jens Klingmann, Bruno Spengler and Augusto Farfus. Visually, the car is identified by smaller aero mirrors, larger air outlets on the front wheel arches and new headlights to match those in the updated M4 road car. The adjustment range of the rear wing has also been altered to provide more aerodynamic efficiency.
Mechanically, the M4 GT3 EVO has new anti-roll bars front and rear, larger rear brake rotors, and an easier to adjust differential that should help to reduce tire and brake wear and make the car easier to drive. “Our engineers have listened very carefully to the feedback from our customers during the development of the EVO cars,” said BMW M Motorsport Head of Customer Racing Björn Lellmann. “The result, in our view, are models that make it even more possible to be consistently close to the limit without taking too much risk, exactly what drivers of all classes need to be fast. Our goal is to win the very big races with our BMW M4 GT3 EVO and at the same time provide every BMW M Motorsport customer with a package that offers maximum chances of success.”
BMW M Motorsport is considering racing the M4 GT3 EVO before the end of this season. The NLS (Nürburgring Endurance Series) SP-X class allows for entry of cars that are not yet homologated and BMW raced the M4 GT4 in that class before it was fully homologated. “It’s more about than running the car, just to run it on the race conditions to get some experience and knowledge because you can do a lot of testing but it’s always on the race conditions sometimes you learn different things,” said BMW M Motorsport boss Andreas Roos in an interview on Sportscar365.com. “This is why we would like to do just some more testing and get some more experience that when we deliver the car, when the car is running with the team from 2025 on, that they have a car which is fully sorted.”
BMW teams that are already racing the M4 GT3 won’t need to buy a new car to get the benefits of the EVO package, as it will be sold as an upgrade package for existing cars. Here in the USA, IMSA has their annual pre-season sanctioned test at Daytona on November 15th-17th, and the M4 GT3 EVO would have to be fully homologated to participate in that test. BMW M Motorsport also has an M4 GT4 EVO coming for the 2025 season, with more details to come on that car. —David Haueter
