If you own a newer, high-end BMW X series, you should check to see if it’s affected by this week’s recall notice. According to reports, BMW is recalling 3,256 vehicles because the seat belt warning light is malfunctioning. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued multiple recalls over the last week, including one for over 3,000 BMWs. This recall was announced with several others, prompting recalls of almost 200,000 vehicles, including more than 187,000 Honda Ridgeline trucks for a rear camera issue and nearly 9,000 Ford vehicles with a software error.

In the NHTSA document, BMW reported that the seat belt system may not detect that the passengers in the vehicle are properly belted. As a result, the seat beat warning light will not illuminate and can cause the supplemental restraint system (SRS) to not deploy properly during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection,” the NHTSA report said.

Dealers will inspect and replace the front seat lower seat belts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on July 5, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
