BMW Recalling Vehicles For Seat Belt Issues

If you own a newer, high-end BMW X series, you should check to see if it’s affected by this week’s recall notice. According to reports, BMW is recalling 3,256 vehicles because the seat belt warning light is malfunctioning. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued multiple recalls over the last week, including one for over 3,000 BMWs. This recall was announced with several others, prompting recalls of almost 200,000 vehicles, including more than 187,000 Honda Ridgeline trucks for a rear camera issue and nearly 9,000 Ford vehicles with a software error.

BMW recalled several new BMW X7 and other series models due to problems with the vehicle accurately sensing when passengers were properly buckled up. The error can impact the warning light and possibly cause the supplemental restraint system to not deploy as intended in a crash. Photo courtesy of BMW AG.

In the NHTSA document, BMW reported that the seat belt system may not detect that the passengers in the vehicle are properly belted. As a result, the seat beat warning light will not illuminate and can cause the supplemental restraint system (SRS) to not deploy properly during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection,” the NHTSA report said.
