Who doesn’t love a ute? While Australia isn’t the only country to have made utes, it’s the one that defined them. Cars like the Holden HSV Maloo and Ford Falcon XR8 were unique to Australia and packed stonking V8s to go with their pickup beds, creating one of the coolest car combinations in history. Those cars inspired enthusiasts around the world to make their own versions, out of many different sports cars, and one such car just sold on Bring a Trailer: this 2022 BMW M4 Competition ute conversion.
Thankfully, this wasn’t some homemade project, but was done by DinMann, a shop in Los Angeles that specialized in carbon fiber BMW body parts. It started out life a 2022 M4 Competition xDrive Coupe, but now loses its rear seats. The back of the cabin was shortened to make space for the bed and upright rear window. That also meant modifying the existing carbon fiber roof, building Chevy Avalanche-style bed sails, and fabricating a fold-down tailgate.
This exact car debuted at SEMA in 2022, but it had a shiny blue wrap then. It also carried the name M4Maloo but, c’mon, “M4loo” was right there, guys. The silly blue wrap has since been removed and it now wears the factory car’s Brooklyn Gray Metallic.
Bring a Trailer
Aside from it being turned into a pickup truck, this M4 Competition has a few other mods. New Pure Turbos Stage 2 turbochargers replace the stock ones, there’s a Wagner Performance carbon fiber air intake, and it also has a GTHaus Meisterschaft exhaust. It sits on AST lowering springs, though, which I feel is antithetical to the idea of a ute. Shouldn’t you want some rear suspension travel if you’re going to be putting stuff in the back? I guess the bed can’t really handle enough weight for that to matter anyway.
Whoever bought this car spent $93,000 on it and now they have what is probably the fastest pickup in America. During instrumented testing, Car and Driver saw the M4 Competition xDrive do 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds. Now imagine doing that with your Home Depot haul in the bed.
