BMW Motorsport has opened registration for the M2 Cup Series. The series, slated to run its first event on July 23–25 at the Lausitzring, will host twelve races over the course of six DTM weekends. The series has already conducted a rollout event on the Lausitzring in May. Participants will compete in the M2 CS Racing.
The M2 Cup series, being run by BMW Motorsport in conjunction with Project I Drivetime, is centrally run to ensure that cars and car setup are equivalent. Vehicle assignments are determined by drawings before each race weekend.
There is ample track time. The format on race weekends includes:
- A 45-minute free practice session
- A 35-minute qualifying session for races one and two
- Two 30-minute-plus-one-lap races
The series provides an opportunity for aspiring racers to run in front of the crowds on DTM weekends, and, as BMW Motorsport notes, provides “advancement opportunities within the BMW M Motorsport Customer Racing segment through to sponsored racing in the BMW M4 GT4 for the following year, as a bonus for the best of the BMW M2 Cup.” The price of registration is 100,000 Euros. As BMW notes, “By promoting motorsport talents, BMW M Motorsport supports the series financially which lowers the registration fee to an amount of 100,000 €.”
